Lost Applause: Ophelia’s Descent into Silence and Reflection
From the eyes of our Film Critic
“Violets At Twilight” is an eleven minutes fourteen seconds short film written by Carol Del Mar and directed by Christopher Johnson. The film explores the story of a young actress Ophelia Phoebe Smith who makes a drastic decision that affects the rest of her life after her final stage performance. The film stars Paige Sciarrino as Ophelia Phoebe Smith.
Overview
The film begins with Christopher Johnson (Paige Sciarrino) standing on a stage. People are cheering seeing her. Ophelia is smiling broadly. But suddenly everything went completely silent. She found no one there to cheer and appreciate her. She describes how she has a fear of losing the stage and her audience. How her mother let her run to the stage when she was two years old.
The film delves into her psychological space where she reminisces about her career and love life. How her lover calls Ophelia galaxy. But now she has nothing. She reflects on her career and her choices which led her to his very moment. Later at the end of the film we see Ophelia make her drown into the bathtub.
Review
Director Christopher Johnson exceptionally sketches the psychology of Christopher Johnson along with writer Carol Del Mar. The screenplay is very tight which allows the viewers to dive straight into the action. The monologue by Ophelia is clap worthy.
Cinematography by Emmanuel Douglas is masterful. He uses the hard shadows with the soft light very effectively. Apart from cinematography, Emmanuel Douglas also handles the editing of the film. The editing is seamless with enough space between two scenes. The visual style enhances the mood and tone of the film.
Conclusion
In short, Christopher Johnson directed “Violets At Twilight” is a beautifully crafted short film which shows the psychological space of a disturbed actress with striking visuals and quiesce performance.
